LAHORE: Punjab Assembly’s Member (MPA) Hina Butt on Wednesday submitted an adjournment motion to condemn the recent circular issued by a private school that dubbed Punjabi as ‘foul language’.
Butt says the ban on Punjabi’s usage – as declared by the private school – is against Article 251 of the constitution.
Beaconhouse School System – one of Pakistan’s top schools – has been scorched after its Sahiwal branch called the Punjabi language ‘foul’ and banned it’s usage within and outside the school premises. The school has, since, received a lot of criticism because of this controversial text.
According to the circular issued on August 22, the headmaster prohibited the use of foul language in the school.
“Foul language is not allowed within and outside the school premises in the morning, during the school hours and after home time. Foul language includes taunts, abuses, Punjabi and the hate speech,” the circular read.
The ban drew strong complaints on the social media – and even editorials were written about it – where the school was asked to take back the released circular and demanded action against those responsible.
The reaction was understandable because Punjabi is the native language of more than a 100 million people and is the tenth most widely-spoken language.
